The thing with free samples or free VST plugins is it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. You have to sift through a lot of crap to find something to your liking. Sometimes though, you know immediately when something free is actually something you can add to your music toolset. Spitfire Audio recently introduced a LABS initiative where they’ll release a free instrument created by London musicians each month for you to use standalone or in your favorite DAW as a plugin. The catch? You’ll probably going to want to explore their paid offerings very soon after trying them.
Spitfire LABS Piano and Strings
The first two free sample libraries from Spitfire Audio consist of a soft felt piano and a strings ensemble. You’ll need to register with Spitfire Audio and download their special app that hosts the LABS audio libraries for you to use as VST2, VST3, AAX or AU plugin.
Recorded at Air Edel Studios, this sound has become a favourite of music makers across the globe. The soft tone is achieved by placing a thin strip of felt between the hammers and the strings.
Fourteen of London’s best string players, recorded at Spitfire HQ by wise-beyond-his-years Harry Wilson. This ensemble was captured using a wide range of microphones including a vintage BBC AXB1. It’s awesome.
