After running the update you will see a new turquoise color appear whenever you connect the mic to your device over USB. The Mikme can then be selected as a regular input in your sound settings.

For the full guide on how to set up your Mikme for USB recording read this:

Here is what else is new in version 2.2.6 of the Mikme firmware:

  • Mikme Microphone can be used as an external USB Microphone for Mac and PC computers (48kHz, 24 Bit, mono)
  • While wireless recording Mikme records in 44.1kHz M4a file only
  • While local recording Mikme records either in 44.1kHz M4a, 44.1kHz Wav, 48kHz Wav or 96kHz Wav file
  • The local recording settings can be set using the MIKME.INI file or the iOS App.
  • OTA (Over the air) updates using the iOS App of MIkme OS
  • More accurate waveform while recording with Mikme App
  • Smaller improvements.

Android users will need to remain patient for their equivalent Mikme app. While the Mikme company confirmed to have Android and Mikme communicating it will still take until the end of the year for an Android version to see the light of day. Until then, the USB mode is definitely an appealing alternative to hold you over.

This A.I. Powered Sampler Takes the Pain Out of Finding the Right Sample Sat, 09 Jun 2018 09:53:19 +0000 It was only a matter of time before A.I. came to help us out with the most mundane tasks of all, finding that fitting sample or drumkit from your sample library for the new track you’re working on. It’s something that easily takes 80% of your time.

Atlas is a new sampler by Algonaut (currently in beta) that harnesses the power of audio analysis together with neural networks and deep learning to organise and group your (drum) sample library in a smart visual map.

You can analyze your own sample libraries (as many as you want) and create a visual map showing all the samples in one place. The A.I. finds all the samples and figures out their type and character and arranges them based on how they sound. There is a drum kit where if you press ‘New Kit’, Atlas will instantly generate a kit with one of each drum type. Couple that with some genre based starter MIDI clips, you can create unique drums and loops in seconds using your own samples.

Atlas Sampler Features

  • Create visual map of your sample library grouped by drum / percussion type
  • Generate 8-piece drumkits with randomize button
  • Drag and drop samples from Atlas to your sequencer / sampler
  • Sample library analysis
  • Like / dislike samples to teach the algorithm what samples you prefer

Atlas is a plugin that works in any DAW such as Ableton, Logic Pro, FL20 etc. Atlas supports both Windows and Mac in both VST and AU plugin formats.

Get These Free, High-Quality Piano and String Plugins by Spitfire Audio Wed, 06 Jun 2018 19:25:10 +0000 The thing with free samples or free VST plugins is it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. You have to sift through a lot of crap to find something to your liking. Sometimes though, you know immediately when something free is actually something you can add to your music toolset. Spitfire Audio recently introduced a LABS initiative where they’ll release a free instrument created by London musicians each month for you to use standalone or in your favorite DAW as a plugin. The catch? You’ll probably going to want to explore their paid offerings very soon after trying them.

Spitfire LABS Piano and Strings

The first two free sample libraries from Spitfire Audio consist of a soft felt piano and a strings ensemble. You’ll need to register with Spitfire Audio and download their special app that hosts the LABS audio libraries for you to use as VST2, VST3, AAX or AU plugin.

Soft Piano

Recorded at Air Edel Studios, this sound has become a favourite of music makers across the globe. The soft tone is achieved by placing a thin strip of felt between the hammers and the strings.

Fourteen of London’s best string players, recorded at Spitfire HQ by wise-beyond-his-years Harry Wilson. This ensemble was captured using a wide range of microphones including a vintage BBC AXB1. It’s awesome.

Volca + Shruthi = Shrolca, a New Kickstarter Synth Wed, 06 Jun 2018 18:48:37 +0000 Shruthi, the DIY hybrid, monophonic desktop synth module is an affordable way to get some real synth power in your hands. The fact that you have to solder together a few boards before you can even get started might put off some people. That’s why someone decided to put the Shruthi in a Volca-esque housing and sell it on Kickstarter.

Shrolca Campaign Details

We have included a touch activated MIDI keyboard that makes performances in the closet fun! The prototype featured on this campaign page has a wooden box but, the production unit will have a machined aluminum body that is less than an inch deep.

The keyboard, sequencer and arp can all transmit midi data to the midi output. Please see videos below for rundown of options and info on some of the many capabilities of the synth.

Other improvements included in the production unit will be: thicker flat black coating to the faceplate, thicker solder for the touchplates, and higher quality materials used for the faceplate. There will also be a eurorack mounting frame with cv i/o available as a separate accessory.

Europa Synth on your mobile device and webbrowser

As if a VST version of a Reason synth isn’t enough Propellerheads went ahead and made the entire thing available to play in your…browser?. Visiting
will open up the Europa synth with all bells and whistles, thanks to some cutting-edge browser technology from Google.

I really hope this marks the beginning of an era where we’ll be able to trial music software (DAWs, plugins, effects) in our browsers before pulling the trigger. Also mentioned is that a mobile app is in the works so iPad musicians might want to wait for this wavetable synth to become available as a standalone app as well.

The PS4 is Getting a Serious Music Making Tool (Including VR Support) Wed, 23 May 2018 20:57:37 +0000 The upcoming Dreams game by Media Molecule is looking to shape up like a mature, 3D LittleBigPlanet. A good part of this game is the editor mode and the video below shows the Media Molecule people demonstrating all the features packed in the music making section.

You can go from picking a ready made song as your level’s soundtrack to getting into the nitty gritty of sound design and composition. Dreams features an entire suite of music making components, with some very innovative ideas.

Here’s some of the features demonstrated by Media Molecule’s audio team:

  • Pick a track from the community as your game’s soundtrack
  • Use premade clips to arrange a new composition in a timeline
  • Use gesture controls on a 2d canvas to record new clips
  • Piano roll editor for further editing a recorded performance
  • Design and publish instruments with a lot of configuration options (ADSR, FX, Pitch)
  • Arpeggiator
  • Record, trim and edit your own samples in a full-fledged editor
  • Import your own audio into the game
  • Apply effects across the entire timeline
  • Have your music track interact with the game’s logic

Watch the video:

This looks like a highly flexible and sophisticated tool to compose music with (within the Dreams universe). Add the game’s VR support and you’ll have a direct competitor for Nintendo Switch’s Korg Gadget.

Let’s hope we don’t have to wait for too long before this game is released.
